Youth drug prevention and community rehabilitation support in Liberia

Youth Drug Prevention & Addiction Recovery Initiative in Liberia

Over 20% of Liberian youth face severe substance abuse risks, including synthetic drugs like "Kush." BASA Development Initiatives (BDI) is a mission to provide community-led counseling, peer support, and rehabilitation services across Montserrado.

In Monrovia's Clara Town neighborhood, a 17-year-old youth sits on a broken wall, unable to return home. The synthetic drug known as Kush-selling for less than the cost of a single meal-has held him trapped for two years.

This crisis affects thousands of young girls and boys across Monrovia and surrounding communities. Following a national emergency declaration, Liberian mothers and community leaders have united to demand accessible addiction recovery support and effective substance abuse prevention programs.

BDI is taking immediate action. We operate on the frontlines in Montserrado with trained peer educators, psychosocial counseling support, and youth outreach programs to stop addiction before it starts and help recovering youth reintegrate into society.
